Binary Labs, a pioneer in digital occupational therapy tools, tasked our team with optimizing Dexteria 2, a fine-motor rehabilitation app. The goal was to refine features and positioning for the stroke rehabilitation market. As part of a cross-functional team, I contributed as a data analyst alongside UX researchers, marketers, and product designers.

Objectives

  1. Identify underutilized features and pain points through data analysis.

  2. Benchmark Dexteria 2 against competitors to uncover gaps.

  3. Conduct user research with educators, occupational therapists, and caregivers.

  4. Deliver actionable recommendations, Tableau dashboards, and Figma mockups.

Research & Analysis

Usage Data

Using Google Analytics and Python, we found that Burger Builder had 6× more engagement than Vantage Point, suggesting theme and visual appeal drive retention.

Platform Insights

63% of use came from schools/institutions, and the app was primarily used on iPads, reinforcing the need for tablet-optimized design.

User Feedback

Educators and therapists praised engaging activities but cited weak onboarding, dated visuals, navigation issues, and limited stroke-specific content.

Competitive Benchmarking

Compared Dexteria 2 with MusicGlove, Tactus Therapy, and RehabCoach, revealing gaps in progression systems, personalization, and breadth of content.

Key Findings

We found that the lack of tutorials and guidance confused new users, making it harder for them to get started effectively. Limited mini-games and stagnant skill progression further reduced long-term engagement. Additionally, the Vantage Point game underperformed and required either a redesign or replacement.

Overall, Dexteria 2 occupies a space between high-cost, clinically validated tools and more affordable but less polished competitors.
